Texto Homenaje a Walter Isard de AMECIDER

Isard Homage from Mexican Section

Dear Kieran:

It was a special pleasure for me to recall you personally –a dear friend indeed- through a letter sent to RSAI sections, and also to see that you are working to host a set of events in memory of our late and much appreciated Walter Isard. Congratulations on such initiative.

The letter was sent by the current RSAI Exec Director, Tomaz Ponce Dentinho (in some way your direct ‘son in law’ in this regard –since you held such a position years ago!). The letter conveys a suggestion of Dr. Y. Higano President of the RSAI, saying that “each one of the sections would send a short letter to Kieran to associate the respective association to this ceremony of gratitude”. Please find attached  the text of our national association.

Receive, Kieran, my most cordial regards for you and your family,

jorge.

“The Mexican Association of Science for Regional Development (AMECIDER) is pleased to acknowledge its deep debt of gratitude to Dr. Walter Isard for the special consideration he always had towards Mexico and especially for his concern regarding the creation of a Mexican Section ofthe RSAI (currently our AMECIDER). This process evolved through the following key stages.

A. As early as 1978 he personally came to Mexico and gave his insights in a first draft of such creation, which was the result of the meeting attended by Isard. The meeting was held in the city of Guanajuato hosted by the Center for Economic and Social Studies of the Third World (CEESTEM)jointly with a group of scholars, among them the current Honorary President of AMECIDER, Jose Luis Cecenia. However the initiative did not materialize in those days for several reasons.

B.  Some years later, in the early 90s(1993), the idea was taken again, this time under the auspices of the National University of Mexico (UNAM) in a meeting that took place in the Seminars Unit “Ignacio Chavez”. Once more, Walter took a prominent role, and a group of important RSAI officers came to Mexico (among them, Lay James Gibson and Niles Hansen). However, during the meeting there appeared some sharply divided opinions and the association was not established.

C. Once more, the good advice of Isard joint by Gibson, succeeded in making it possible to bring the 3rd PRSCO Summer Institute to Mexico. It was hosted by the Regional Center for Multidisciplinary Research (CRIM- UNAM), in the city of Cuernavaca in June 1994. The meeting brought a large and important group of Asian scholars, which gave a fresh air to the idea of a Mexican association, this time linked to the PRSCO and through it to the RSAI. A few months later (April, 1995) AMECIDER was born in real fact, under its first President, Jose Luis Cecenia, and its first Secretary, Salvador Rodriguez.

D. Ever since, AMECIDER has been working for the development of regional science in Mexico (15 national meetings, two international congresses and a wide set of publications). Moreover, in the course of the years it has been a special privilege of AMECIDER’s councilor within PRSCO, to meet Walter in several international meetings -of the RSAI and the PRSCO- and to thank him personally for his sustained concern for the creation and consolidation of our Mexican section. Also, especially important has been to receive his broad-vision insights. For example, a memorable occasion when he said: “Look, Mexican regions do have invaluable treasures, not only economically, but also culturally, and I could concretely see in them the commonalities in art, science and religion, even in their evolutionary perspective. So, don’t forget to keep an eye on such treasures in your Section”. Indeed, AMECIDER hopes not to fall short with regards to such breathtaking advice. It is really Walter Isard’s legacy to AMECIDER.

A LOS MIEMBROS DE LA PRSCO Y LA SECCIÓN JAPÓN DE RSAI

Dr. Yoshiro Higano, Presidente de PRSCO

Dr. Hiroyuki Shibusawa, Secretario General de PRSCO

Estimados colegas:

TO THE MEMBERS OF PRSCO AND THE JAPAN SECTION OF THE RSAI

Dr. Yoshiro Higano, President of PRSCO

Dr. Hiroyuki Shibusawa, Secretary General of PRSCO

Dear colleagues:

All our members of the Mexican section of the RSAI (AMECIDER) are deeply concerned about the dreadful events occurred in your country recently. We earnestly wish we could do something to alleviate your difficult moments. Is there anything we can do to contribute in such a hard task? Just tell us please!

Even though we are located so far away, we feel very close to you for several reasons and facts: firstly, we are colleagues endeavoured to similar professional study fields, secondly, but not less important, we never forget that the RSAI Japanese Section actively supported our intention to join the PRSCO and the RSAI (we well remember how some of you personally got involved in fostering the first steps of our Association); and thirdly, we also remember and feel deeply grateful and obliged to Japan because from it we received one of the first and most important help during the terrible earthquakes that swept Mexico  in September 1985.

Thus, on behalf of our AMECIDER membership and myself, we wanted to offer you in the present moments, our moral, friendly and material support.

Please receive our deeply condolence and warm friendship

Dr. Adolfo Sánchez Almanza

President of the Mexican Association of

Science for Regional Development (AMECIDER)
